Parenting Mercer Island is brought to you by Mercer Island Youth and Family Services (MIYFS), a department within the City of Mercer Island, with funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

MIYFS is dedicated to helping Islanders grow, thrive and contribute to the community. Residents of Mercer Island are eligible for a variety of services from MIYFS including school-based counseling, community-based counseling, family assistance, senior assistance, and food security. Teen Link. Answered by teens 6pm – 10pm.

Teen Link is a program of Crisis Connections that serves youth in Washington State. Teen volunteers are trained to listen to your concerns and talk with you about whatever’s on your mind – bullying, drug and alcohol concerns, relationships, stress, depression or any other issues you’re facing. Calls and chats are confidential.

Domestic Violence Helpline

Since 1982, LifeWire has helped thousands of survivors of domestic violence in East and North King County, including immigrants, men, members of the LGBTQ community, and teens. The 24-hour helpline will connect you with an advocate.

King County 211

King County 211 connects residents in King County to the help they need, including housing assistance, help with financial needs, food bank locations and more.

King County Sexual Assault Crisis Line

Whether you have experienced a sexual assault yourself, or want to know more about how to help someone else, this crisis line is available 24/7 with free, confidential support and information.

Public Health Eastgate Teen Clinic

 All services at Public Health Teen Clinics are free or low cost. Young people are welcome at Teen Clinics up to their 21st birthday. Straight, gay, lesbian, bi, trans, queer, and questioning teens are welcome.

Youth Eastside Services (YES)

Mercer Island teens are eligible to receive substance use treatment at Youth Eastside Services.

Crisis Text Line

Crisis Text Line is here for any crisis. A live, trained Crisis Counselor receives the text and responds, all from our secure online platform. The volunteer Crisis Counselor will help you move from a hot moment to a cool moment.

Homeless Shelter/Safe Place

When teens find themselves in crisis or need a place to stay, they should know how and where to get help. Thanks to Safe Place, immediate help is never too far away.

National Eating Disorder Association Hotline

Contact the NEDA Helpline for support, resources, and treatment options for yourself or a loved one who is struggling with an eating disorder. Helpline volunteers are trained to help you find the support and information you need.

Trans Lifeline

Trans Lifeline is run by and for trans people and provides trans peer support. The mission of Trans Lifeline is to connect trans people to the community support and resources needed to survive and thrive.

Trevor Project – LGBTQA+

Provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning young people ages 13-24. Includes a 24-hour crisis intervention and suicide prevention lifeline and free, confidential secure instant message servicing and text messaging with a counselor 24/7. In the Trevor Support Center youth can find answers to frequently asked questions, and explore resources related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Lambert House – LGBTQA+

Lambert House in Seattle empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth through the development of leadership, social, and life skills. Lambert House is a safe place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth ages 10-22.

PFLAG

PFLAG ​is the nation's largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them. PFLAG provides a list of national crisis hotlines.

If you are concerned about an individual and need immediate assistance, call 911 or refer to one of the Local or National Crisis Supports.

University of Washington (UW) Forefront Suicide Prevention

If you are concerned about a youth or adult who may be considering suicide, you can help. The UW Forefront Suicide Prevention LEARN program, provides information and skills to help you recognize when someone may be at risk for suicide and how to connect them with immediate help. LEARN is an acronym for five steps: LOOK for Signs, EMPATHIZE and Listen, ASK Directly About Suicide, REDUCE the Dangers, and NEXT STEPS.

Knowing how to recognize signs of suicide could help save someone’s life. Just like first aid and CPR, this is valuable knowledge for everyone to have in their toolkit to support a healthy family and community. Parents are the most powerful influence in the decisions teens makes about drugs. Gather tips for having these important conversations with your child/teen. Start Talking Now is supported by the Washington State Health Care Authority

Talk. They Hear You.

The Talk. They Hear You. campaign aims to reduce underage drinking and other substance use among youths under the age of 21 by providing parents and caregivers with information and resources they need to address these issues with their children early and often. Learn how to talk to your children about substances and how to answer the tough questions. The Talk. They Hear You. Campaign is supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Island Space

Island Space is a movement that promotes healthy lifestyles for teens in Mercer Island. The Island Space campaign is focused on: Improving student mental health, decreasing substance use as a coping mechanism, and providing teens information about healthy ways to deal with stress and the pressure to succeed.

Island Space is supported by the Mercer Island Healthy Youth Initiative.

Take Five MI

Take Five MI is a personalized online tool that allows teens to reflect on how they are feeling and how they tend to cope. The tool also shares statistics about what other high school students are experiencing. The anonymous tool is personalized based on information provided by the individual and offers tips and strategies to help cope with stress.

Refusal Skills for Teens

Refusal skills are techniques that help teens resist peer pressure and say “no” to things they don’t want to do. Use these tips to teach your child how to say “no” to alcohol, drugs and other risky behaviors, while still maintaining their friendships.

Focus On – Alcohol Prevention

The Focus On campaign educates teens about the risks and consequences of underage alcohol use. The Focus On campaign is supported by the Washington Healthy Youth Coalition, a partnership of several Washington state agencies and organizations who are united in preventing underage use of alcohol and marijuana.

YOU CAN – Cannabis Prevention

The You Can campaign educates teens about the risks and consequences of using marijuana. The You Can campaign is supported by the Marijuana Prevention and Education Program within the Division of Prevention and Community Health at the Washington State Department of Health.

CHOOSE YOU – Vape (E-Cigarette) Prevention

The Choose You campaign encourages teens to focus on the things that matter most and avoid vapes. The campaign addresses how nicotine in vapes impacts mental and physical health, offers healthy ways to cope with stress, and provides resources that are proven to help teens quit vapes. The Choose You campaign is supported by the Washington State Department of Health.

One Choice

It is a myth that all teens “experiment” with substance use. More than ever young people are making ONE CHOICE to not use any substances. Learn how the developing adolescent brain is uniquely vulnerable to substance use and gather prevention resources for parents. The One Choice Prevention website is managed by the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc., a non-profit organization that works to reduce illegal drug use and improve prevention and treatment.
